Domaine D’Eole Coteaux D’Aix-En-Provence Red 2021

THE WINES

45% Syrah, 45% Grenache, 10% Carignan.  Aged in seasoned oak, concrete vat and concrete egg.

We’ve loved drinking Provence reds in Provence, though the sometimes loose-knit, rustic style is best left as a holiday indulgence or romance.  Here’s one which firmly translates.

Not dissimilar to a good Côtes du Rhône with more structural lightness; blackberry conserve, coffee grinds, saltbush, plums and creosote.  Bright fruited with some violet notes lifting the palate, gently grainy tannins give nice length with a little saline finish to balance.  There’s something about Provence reds that screams ‘lunchtime wine’, with these ever versatile and well suited to grazing boards and a wide range of hot and cold dishes.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Domaine D’Eole

Coteaux D’Aix-En-Provence

One Of Provence’S Most Highly Regarded Estates

Domaine d’Eole was founded in 1992 and purchased in 1996 by French financier Christian Raymont. German viticulturalist Matthias Wimmer was employed the same year and is retained to this day. Situated in Eygalières at the base of the dramatic Alpilles mountain range, the combination of high sunlight hours, well drained limestone soils and mistral wind is an ideal combination for the practice of organic viticulture, with the estate certified since 1996.

The house style is of complexity beyond regional norms, the minimal intervention wines detailed and energetic. Domaine d’Eole is an excellent representative of the Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence appellation, with these wines often weightier and more acid driven due to the continental climate influences.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Biodynamic Minimal Intervention Wines From A Beautiful Adelaide Hills Estate

Owner Damon Nagel started life as a sommelier in Adelaide, moving to London to further his wine education whilst working in top end dining restaurants. Achieving success in London property, he would eventually return to Adelaide, purchasing the beautiful undulating Brackenwood farm in the early 2000s, first releasing wines from vintage 2005.

Winemaking is today overseen by Daniel Zuzolo, ex Primo Estate, with the stable offering interesting blends and lesser seen plantings of Barbera and Gamay alongside more traditional offerings such as Shiraz and Riesling.

Growing and winemaking is strictly along biodynamic lines, with no additions bar minimal sulphur at bottling. A pure set of releases very much at home alongside Felixir’s European offerings, fun styles of personality with enough depth and interest to be taken seriously.
